Iv found a simple test to test if the phone has audio ic failure / failure of traces to the ic.

iv has several phones come in now where you go to make a call and no audio can be heard.

if you press the speaker phone button the button will turn on and then off again.

if you take a cab of freeze spray without taking the phone apart and spray it on the back of the phone where the audio ic is for 5 seconds. Then wait 10 seconds and try making the call again.

on all of the boards with audio ic problems the speaker will now work again when on a call perfectly. It will continue to work again until the phone heats up again and the ic pulls away from its pads once again.

this is quite a useful test as it can be done without taking the phone apart at all. Iv tried it on 4 phones now with the same problem and brings it back on all of them until the phone warms up, so good for confirming the problem is audio ic / pads.

Ian, one question !! this is to distinguish audio codec ic failures, or bad trace C12 ?

Can you explain in better detail ?

Thanks

It could be either bad balls or bad trace. The thermal contraction causes the ic to pull close to the pads very slightly bringing the connection back. So you know by this that it's something related to audio if you spray in this area and it then works.

its more of a quick test than an in depth solution. It's so you can say to the customer "it's 90% going to be this wrong with the phone"
